The Cheltenham Festival is a four-day event which sees the finest racehorses in the world do battle, however it is also a great opportunity for the trainers to put on show the fruits of their labour. Indeed the award for Top Trainer at the Cheltenham Festival is certainly one of the most prestigious accolades in horse racing and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top at Prestbury Park next week.

Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival with regard to the number of winners saddled and he won the award in 2019, some firms going as low as 8/11 that he repeats this feat in 2020. Punters are siding with the bookies on this one with a reported 29% of all bets in this particular market being aimed towards the Irishman claiming the prize.

Mullins is without doubt a worthy contender with the likes of Appreciate It, Benie Des Dieux and Al Boum Photo in his stable.

At just 42 years of age, Gordon Elliott is seen by many as a new kid on the block, however he has enjoyed a rapid rise to stardom with the Top Trainer award being won at the 2017 and 2018 Cheltenham Festivals. Elliot is second favourite to receive the accolade in 2020 at odds of 3/1 and this could prove excellent value given that he has in his stable the likes of Tiger Roll, Envoi Allen and Delta Work.

Mullins have been the most-backed trainer over the past week or so, however Elliott has received more bets over the past 24 hours with a reported 32% being aimed in his direction.

The shortest-priced English trainer for the award is Nicky Henderson who is a 10/3 shot. Henderson won the Top Trainer award at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival and he certainly shouldn’t be overlooked this time around with the likes of Champ and Altior in his camp.
