West Bromwich Albion’s title ambitions were dealt a blow when they lost 1-0 at Wigan Athetic in their first outing following the international break although the Baggies remain firm favourites to clinch the Championship title at the end of the season. Indeed Darren Moore’s men sit just a single point below table-topping Middlesbrough despite their disappointing weekend result and with all the sides at the top end of the table dropping points in recent weeks, there’s little cause for concern at the Hawthorns just yet. Prior to the defeat at Wigan on Saturday, West Bromwich Albion had won five and drawn two of their previous seven league matches and one can only assume that the disappointing result at the DW Stadium was nothing more than a minor blip in an otherwise excellent campaign. Indeed in front of their home fans, the Baggies have won all of their home league matches since the opening-day defeat to Bolton Wanderers and we expect them to continue in a similar fashion on Wednesday evening, the bookmakers giving away free bets on West Bromwich Albion v Derby County.
That’s certainly not to say that the home side will have things all their own way in this midweek clash. Visitors Derby County have been a force to be reckoned with in recent weeks with just a single defeat in their last seven outings – this run including an 8-6 penalty shoot-out win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. We expect Frank Lampard’s men to give a good account of themselves as they look to continue the momentum following their fine 2-1 win over high-flying Sheffield United last time out, however while the evidence suggests that the Rams will add to the scoreline at the Hawthorns this week, we’ll be siding with the Baggies to outgun their opponents and keep their title ambitions very much alive, BetVictor Bookmakers going 14/5 on West Bromwich Albion to win and both teams to score.
