At the start of the 2018/19 campaign, Liverpool player Virgil van Dijk was as much as 125/1 to win the PFA Player of the Year award, however his odds have since tumbled throughout the first half of the season with punters backing the centre-back in their droves, the Dutchman receiving around 27% of all bets on this market since the start of the Premier League season in August.
Liverpool have been red-hot this term with a mere ten goals conceded in their 21 league outings thus far, fifteen less than the total leaked at the same stage of last season and six less than Chelsea who possess the second-best defensive record in the top-flight this term.
Van Dijk’s closest rival in the outright betting is Manchester City’s David Silva at odds of 7/1 with William Hill Bookmakers while the same firm go 8/1 on Chelsea’s Eden Hazard to win the coveted award, the same price as Mohamed Salah. 10/1 shots Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are all being seen as unlikely outside chances for the award while Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho are way out at 25/1 apiece.
Virgil van Dijk has been putting in some tremendous performances throughout the season and he has certainly transformed a defence which in fairness was severely lacking prior to his arrival. The punters continue to back the Dutchman in their droves and as such the 125/1 on offer for Van Dijk to win the PFA Player of the Year award back in August looks pretty ludicrous right now. He would certainly prove to be a worthy winner given that it’s unlikely that Liverpool would be in their current position in the Premier League without him in the ranks.
