Sunderland and Walsall fought-out a 1-1 draw in the original FA Cup second-round tie and they meet for a second time in the resultant replay on Tuesday evening, both sides having been in League One action just a few days earlier (results not known at the time of writing). Indeed this is the third meeting between the Black Cats and the Saddlers in the past fortnight or so with a 2-2 draw the outcome of their League One meeting, however Sunderland will be looking to build on their excellent run which, prior to the weekend meeting with Accrington Stanley, consisted of ten wins and three draws in their previous thirteen matches.
Sunderland manager Jack Ross has moulded his side into a tough nut to crack in front of their home fans and it’s hard to make a case for them being denied a place in the third round draw. Nevertheless the hosts still have plenty to prove and they will look to build on what has been an excellent goalscoring record on home soil this season, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Sunderland v Walsall.
Walsall have proven themselves extremely tough for Sunderland to beat with stalemate in each of their last two meetings. The Saddlers will be desperate to build on these performances and make life tough for the Black Cats once again, however their away form isn’t much to write home about with their confidence likely to have been dented by defeats to the likes of Portsmouth (2-0) and Shrewsbury (2-1, Checkatrade Trophy) in recent weeks. Sunderland will seek to capitalise on the visitors’ woes in front of the ever-expectant home fans and we’ll be siding with them to do just that in what has the makings of a closely-fought affair, Coral Bookmakers going 11/4 on Sunderland to win and both teams to score.
