2021 St Leger Runners and Riders
Saturday, September 11th 2021. 3:35pm
First run in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of the five classics and the race is open to both colts and fillies of three years old. Held at Doncaster Racecourse, this classic is run over a distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards each September.
Runners worthy of consideration in the 2021 St Leger
Hurricane Lane (10/11) Having triumphed in the Irish Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris in the last two outings, Hurricane Lane remains firm favourite at odds-on to win the final Classic of the season this weekend. The Charlie Appleby-trained runner is expected to step-up to the 14 furlong distance with the minimum of fuss and his stamina is expected to stand up to the challenge.
Mojo Star (13/2) Chased home Adayar in the Derby at odds of 50/1 with Hurricane Lane finishing third, Mojo Star could only manage fifth behind that rival three weeks later at the Curragh. In fairness, luck went against him in running when he was hampered just three out and again at the final quarter-mile stage. A solid showing in a maiden at Newbury will be a big confidence booster however and he certainly represents a big threat to the favourite as far as we’re concerned, especially so given that he will be suited to the step-up to a mile-and-six on the galloping track here.
Interpretation (14/1) This lightly-raced colt completed a hat-trick with wins at Leopardstown (twice) and the Curragh this season , his latest triumph involving a win over Fernando Vichi in a Listed contest over this trip. Finding plenty in reserve when challenged and travelling well, he looked an extremely promising young stayer on that occasion and this improvement certainly hasn’t finished yet we feel. A serious contender on Saturday afternoon at a solid price.
