At one time Southampton were a beacon of hope for many aspiring lower-end Premier League sides, however while they made it into the Europa League and produced top-end players such as Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, the momentum has slowed substantially and the Saints only just avoided the drop down to the Championship at the end of last season. This time around, they might not be quite so lucky.
Southampton currently sit 16th in the Premier League following their huge 6-1 demolition at the hands of a rampant Manchester City last weekend, Mark Hughes’ men winless in their last seven league games and sitting on a miserable points total of just seven. Should Hughes fail to arrest the downward spiral soon then he may be well advised to search for alternative employment elsewhere. His side are slight favourites to edge their way to three points in front of their home fans although it’s hard to find the confidence in them this weekend, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Southampton v Watford.
The visiting Hornets launched their campaign in better fashion than many predicted, Spanish boss Javi Gracia appearing to have learnt from his tough few months in charge of Watford with five wins in the opening five matches of 2018/19. Things have gone slightly awry since then however and the Hornets have lost five of their last eight competitive outings, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to a previously-winless Newcastle United last weekend.
It’s not easy picking a winner here. The Hornets occupy a higher position in the Premier League table but their excellent early-season form appears to have abandoned them recently and they were the first side this season to lose to the Magpies last time out. Southampton will be at a low ebb following their thrashing by Manchester City and the seven-match winless run which they have endured, however they had shared the spoils in their two games prior to the meeting with the Citizens and for that reason alone we’ll be backing this game to end all-square with Unibet Bookmakers going 12/5 on a draw.
