The fourth round of the FA Cup looked to be beckoning for Southampton earlier this month as the south-coast side stormed into a 2-0 lead against Derby County at Pride Park, however the Championship side clearly had other ideas and they levelled matters within a three-minute spell to force a replay at St Mary’s Stadium this week. The big question is, who will come out on top when the sides lock horns for a second time on Wednesday evening?
Southampton aren’t enjoying the best of form right now but they managed to hold high-flying Chelsea to a goal-less draw at Stamford Bridge in early January and their subsequent Premier League outing ended in a 2-0 win at a Leicester City side which have been solid at the King Power Stadium this term. On home soil, the Saints have been less impressive of late with defeat in their last two outings at St Mary’s although they have looked pretty sharp at times recently and we expect them to take the chances which may be presented to them on Wednesday evening, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Southampton v Derby County.
Derby County remain amongst the play-off contenders in the Championship but they haven’t been at their best on the road with their latest outing ending in a convincing 2-0 defeat at league leaders Leeds United on Friday evening. Nevertheless their previous away day saw the Rams beat Norwich City by the odd goal in a seven-goal thriller although while we do envisage the visitors getting on the scoresheet and making life difficult for their third-round opponents, we’ll be siding with the hosts to edge this match their way and run out winners in ninety minutes, Coral Bookmakers going 5/2 on Southampton to win and both teams to score.
