The appointment of Mark Hughes as Southampton manager was a major factor in side’s escape from relegation at the end of 2018/19. The former Stoke City gaffer managed to steer the Saints to safety but he wasn’t able to carry this momentum into the new campaign and it was no massive surprise when he was given the boot with the side struggling once again in the lower echelons of the Premier League table.
Ralph Hassenhuttl is now the man in the hot-seat at St Mary’s and he has implemented his own style at the club with much in the way of success thus far. The Saints head into their midweek meeting with Crystal Palace on the back of an excellent run during which they have collected seven points from their last three league outings and hauled themselves up to fifteenth in the league table. They are firm favourites to grab themselves a third win on the bounce on Wednesday evening although it certainly won’t be plain sailing for the home side.

Crystal Palace sit just a single place above the Saints heading into this match with goal-difference alone separating the two sides. They managed to avoid relegation under the guidance of Roy Hodgson last season but the current campaign looks set to end with another struggle against the drop. The Eagles did enjoy a morale-boosting FA Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and they have won a few plaudits for their recent wins at Wolves and Man City, however in general Palace have been far from impressive on their travels and we envisage them coming off second-best in their midweek meeting with a Southampton outfit which look an improved side under Hassenhuttl. Southampton have been struggling for clean sheets of late and as such we envisage the visitors adding to the scoreline but this will likely prove little more than a consolation for the Eagles and we’ll be siding firmly with the Saints to collect all three points on Wednesday evening, William Hill Bookmakers going 7/2 on Southampton town and both teams to score.
