Southampton v Burnley Match Preview

Southampton will be desperate to return to winning ways and possibly haul themselves into the top half of the table this weekend

Southampton and weekend opponents Burnley sit level on points in the lower half of the Premier League table and as such, we’re expecting a relatively closely-fought affair when they lock horns at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

Southampton v Burnley: 12:30 pm, Saturday 15th February, St Mary’s Stadium. BT Sport 1

Home discomforts

Southampton’s less-than-impressive record in front of their home fans this season doesn’t justify them being billed as odds-on favourites to secure all three points when Burnley come to town on Saturday afternoon. The Saints have undeniably improved since the international break in November but they have generally been better on their travels this term with double the number of victories away from the comforts of St Mary’s.

Patience

The Southampton board have shown plenty of patience regarding boss Ralph Hassenhuttl although while there has been noticeable improvement following an uncertain opening twelve months in the hot-seat, the Austrian has seen his side concede seven goals in their last two outings. Fortunately for him, the opponents on these occasions were Liverpool at Anfield and Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Inconsistent

It’s fair to say that Burnley are probably the most hit-and-miss team in the Premier League this season and as such it is no surprise to see them ensconced in the middle of the table as things stand. Unlike their weekend opponents, Burnley have been better in front of their home fans this term although they have also enjoyed some excellent away results, most noticeable amongst these being a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last month.

Spoils shared

Burnley are unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Saints and with the home side collecting fewer points at home than any other team in the top-flight, we fancy the Clarets’ chances of holding Southampton to a draw on Saturday afternoon.
