Burnley’s reward for finishing in the top-seven in the Premier League last season was a place in the Europa League qualifying rounds, their first involvement in European competition since 1967 and a chance to get some competitive action under the belts ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Clarets enjoyed a five 4-2 aggregate win over Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in their last European outing and their ‘proper’ European tour got underway last night when they held Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir to a goal-less draw. Clearly they will need to be very careful of conceding any away goals in the return match although we fancy their chances of edging their way to victory at Turf Moor next week.
Prior to that however, the Clarets make a trip to St Mary’s for their Premier League opener on Sunday and boss Sean Dyche will be confident that his men can get off to a great start by bringing the three points back home with them, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Southampton v Burnley.
Southampton only just avoided relegation at the end of last season with a late surge seeing them clinch a much-needed seven points in three late matches. This earned for boss Mark Hughes the managerial position on a permanent basis although the Saints have been pretty quiet in the summer transfer window, the only notable signing being Liverpool’s Danny Ings on deadline day.
The bookies have the Saints priced at odds-on to win this match for some reason – we can’t really figure out why – and as far as we’re concerned, Burnley represent excellent value to avoid defeat on Sunday afternoon, Betway Bookmakers going Evens on Burnley/Draw on the Double Chance market.
