After just a single season in the Scottish Championship, Ayr United are looking like genuine promotion contenders and while they sit just two points clear at the top of the division as things stand, it would be no huge shock to see them remain in their lofty position until the end of the season. They underlined their promotion credentials in convincing fashion when thrashing Dundee United 5-0 at Tannadice last weekend and we expect them to give a good account of themselves on Friday evening when they welcome Inverness Caledonian Thistle to Somerset Park in the opening Championship match of the weekend.
Ross County remain hot on the heels of the ‘Honest Men’ heading into the 16th round of Scottish Championship fixtures and the Highlanders will look to keep apace of the league leaders when they entertain Queen of the South at Victoria Park.
Third-placed Dundee United will be eager to bounce back from their 5-0 hammering by Ayr United last time out when they face Greenock Morton at Cappielow while at the opposite end of the league table, struggling Patrick Thistle will be confident of returning to winning ways when they host Dunfermline at Firhill.
Falkirk and Alloa Athletic both sit just a single point above the Jags at the foot of the Championship table and they lock horns with each other in what has the feel of a real six-pointer, even at this relatively early stage of the season.
The big question is, who will be the winners and losers in this weekend’s Scottish Championship line-up? Here’s what we think…
