Exeter have emerged as one of the major forces in English rugby union in recent years but while the Chiefs sit four points clear at the top of the Gallagher Premiership table as things stand, second-placed Saracens are firm odds-on favourites to lift the title at the end of the campaign.
The London side have been red-hot this season and while they were edged to a 24-18 defeat by Sale in their opening game of 2019. they bounced back in emphatic fashion to record back-to-back European Rugby Champions Cup wins over Lyon (10-28) and Glasgow Warriors (38-19) in their last two outings. In the Premiership, the north London side have lost just twice since the start of the season with their 112 points-difference beaten only by table-topping Exeter. Little wonder that the bookmakers have them chalked-in as odds-on favourites to once again lift the Premiership crown this term.
Exeter Chiefs have also been hugely impressive this season although there was disappointment when they were nudged to a closely-fought 9-7 defeat at Munster in the Champions Cup last time out. Nevertheless they are flying high in the English top-flight with their eleven bonus points sending them four points clear of second-placed Saracens.
The Chiefs won their first ever Premiership title at the end of 2016/17 with a 23-20 victory over Wasps after extra-time, however we expect a similar outcome to last season’s final when Saracens stole the crown thanks to a 27-10 win over the Devon side. Can the Chiefs exact their revenge in the showpiece final later this year? We don’t expect so!
