Rotherham United dropped out of the Football League Championship at the end of 2016/17 following what was an utter dreadful campaign, however upon gaining promotion back up from League One at the first time of asking, many expected them to get off to a decent enough start upon their return to the second-tier. They couldn’t have been more wrong.
The Millers were blown away by Brentford on Saturday afternoon, the hosts dominating from start to finish at Griffin Park and soaring into a 2-0 lead by the interval. Rotherham were left in no doubt that a vast improvement in their performance was needed in the second half, however it was Brentford who once again dominated and a further three home goals plus a consolation for the visitors was how things ended.
This emphatic defeat has sent the Millers down to the foot of the Championship table after just one game and they are now Evens with Ladbrokes Bookmakers to suffer a second relegation in three seasons. Also in the mix to make a drop down to League One are Bolton Wanderers (13/8), Reading (5/2) and Ipswich Town (11/4).
There is clearly plenty of time for the Millers to turn things around although a second successive defeat next weekend could leave them cast adrift at the foot of the table and they will be desperate to avoid a defeat of 2016/17.
