Relegation Battle

With just a single game left to play, the battle for survival continues at the bottom end of the Premier League table. Aston Villa, Watford and AFC Bournemouth all remain in grave danger of joining Norwich City in the Championship next season, however which one of these three sides will retain their top-flight status?

Five-year Stint

Of the three, Bournemouth are almost certain to drop down to the second tier with Eddie Howe’s men sitting three points behind their two rivals. The Cherries have endured a thoroughly miserable campaign and the likelihood is that their five-season stint in the Premier League is set to draw to a close. In fairness, given that many pundits expected the south-coast outfit to be relegated immediately following their first season in the top flight, they haven’t done too bad overall. The bookies are firmly of the opinion that Bournemouth will be plying their trade in the Championship next term and it’s hard to argue with the odds of 1/33 on them actually doing so.

Punters’ Choice

At Vicarage Road, the recent sacking of Watford boss Nigel Pearson has resulted in the odds on the Hornets being relegated being slashed to odds-on, most bookies going 2/7 that they find themselves in the second tier next season. Indeed since Pearson’s sacking, Watford have been the most heavily backed side in this market with around 51% of all bets being aimed towards them. Aston Villa’s excellent and much-needed victory over Arsenal was a massive boost for their Premier League survival bid and they are now odds-against for the drop with most bookies going 2/1.

Down to the Wire

This relegation dog-fight will likely go right down to the wire and it certainly doesn’t look good for either Watford or Bournemouth. The Hornets are a general 27/10 punt to beat Arsenal in their final outing of the campaign while Bournemouth are 2/1 to win against Everton at Goodison Park and Aston Villa are 5/4 to get the better of West Ham United.
