Next Manchester United Permanent Manager: Is Solskjær a shoe-in at 1/2?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has thus far enjoyed an excellent start to life at Old Trafford and punters are backing him in their droves to become next permanent Red Devils boss

UPDATE: 28.01.19

Manchester United’s winning run was extended to eight games across all competitions on Friday evening when the Red Devils cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a convincing 3-1 win over fellow Premier League high-flyers Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Quick first-half goals from Sanchez and Lingard set the scene for much of the match as United edged their way to victory in what was a pulsating affair and it has boosted the chances of Ole Gunnar Solskjær becoming permanent manager at Old Trafford beyond the current season.

There can be little doubt that the Norwegian has reinvigorated the side since his arrival at Old Trafford and he will be confident of steering his men to a ninth-consecutive victory when they entertain Premier League strugglers Burnley on Tuesday evening. A win for the Red Devils on Tuesday would lift them level with Chelsea in the league table and there is every possibility given recent performances that they can see off Paris St-Germain in their Champions League last-sixteen encounter next month.

It is no surprise to see the odds on Solskjær being appointed United boss on a permanent footing being slashed from 5/6 to just 1/2 following the win over the Gunners. Indeed with the Red Devils up against the likes of Burnley, Leicester City and Fulham in their next three outings, the likelihood is that the side may head into their European outing on the back of an eleven-game winning run and this would certainly boost the Norwegian’s chances of being in the hot-seat at the start of 2019/20.

UPDATE: 26.01.19

Manchester United have been red-hot under the guidance of interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the likelihood of him being appointed as United boss on a permanent footing beyond the current season is growing week-by-week. The Red Devils have won their last seven games across all competitions under the Norwegian and the evidence suggests that they will continue this run when they line-up against Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup tonight. Should this prove to be the case, Solskjaer’s odds on being United boss at the start of 2019/20 would almost certainly drop even further but as things stand he is odds-on at 5/6 with Betfair Bookmakers to still be at Old Trafford at the start of next season.

Under Jose Mourinho, United had some fundamental issues with their mentality, this fact illustrated by the fact that they could clearly turn it on in the second-half of their meeting with Manchester City yet still lose to West Bromwich Albion just over a week later. This unpredictability has been far from apparent under Solskjaer and as such it is no surprise to see him being touted and heavily backed to become next permanent Red Devils boss.

Gareth Southgate’s reputation as England manager received a massive boost when he led his national side to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the possibility remains that this enhanced reputation may be enough to steer him into the hot-seat at Old Trafford over the next few weeks. Reports are emerging which suggest that Manchester United may be set to make a move on the Three Lions boss and as such his odds on being offered the position have tumbled from around 40/1 to 10/1 with some leading bookmakers.

William Hill Bookmakers go 10/1 that Southgate is in charge at Old Trafford on the opening day of the 2019/20 season and the punters are backing this eventuality in their droves with a reported 92% of bets being placed on Southgate joining Manchester United, easily the biggest mover in this particular market.

The England manager is now joint-fifth alongside Massimiliano Allegri in the outright betting behind current caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mauricio Pochettino at 7/4 apiece and Zinedine Zidane at 9/1.

It’s hardly a surprise that many are linking Southgate with the United job given that the Red Devils are one of only few clubs which could potentially lure the England boss away from his position as national coach. The Three Lions’ manager has had his reputation boosted by his side’s showing in Russia during the summer and should he be appointed as United boss, then it would certainly be one of the biggest football news stories of the year.
