Newcastle United v Watford Match Preview & Free Bets

Newcastle United will aim to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2006

Newcastle United look set to become embroiled in a relegation scrap towards the end of the season, hardly a surprise given the lack of investment in the playing squad by the club owners. The supporters are understandably less than impressed with the current state of affairs and the possibility remains that the Magpies may well be plying their trade in the Championship next season.

The North East side have been starved of silverware for many years now and this wait continues with their FA Cup record being truly awful in recent seasons due to their position in the league being considered of far more importance. United haven’t made it into the last sixteen of the competition for thirteen years, however can they put this poor record to an end when they entertain Watford at St James’ Park this weekend?

Watford have thus far enjoyed a decent season in the top-flight despite many pundits confidently predicting a difficult campaign for the Hornets. They did struggle in the latter stages of 2017/18 but manager Javi Gracia has succeeded in turning things around at Vicarage Road with some attractive football on display. Indeed there’s even a chance that Watford can qualify for Europe should they continue the sort of form which has lifted them into seventh position in the Premier League.

Given that the Hornets are very unlikely to become involved in a relegation battle, Gracia will be affording the FA Cup all the importance that it deserves and given Newcastle’s poor record in the competition there’s plenty of value to be had in backing the visitors to come off best this weekend. Blackburn Rovers managed to hold the Magpies to a draw at this venue in the last round of the competition and whilst we’re not expecting a goal-fest on Saturday afternoon, we’ll be siding with the Hornets to secure for themselves a passage into the last sixteen of the FA Cup, Coral Bookmakers going 11/8 on Watford to win.
