Newcastle United surprised many by finishing in the top half of the Premier League last term, however the Magpies’ owners remain hugely unpopular on Tyneside and while Spanish manager Rafael Benitez is loved by the supporters, he has limited finances available to him and we don’t fancy his chances of building on the relative success of last season.
Clearly not too much should be read into pre-season results, however the fact that Newcastle have managed just a single win in their five friendly games is slightly alarming. Nevertheless they have made some interesting additions to the squad during the summer with new arrivals including centre-back Fabian Schar and striker Salomon Rondon, however a tough assignment awaits them this weekend when they lock horns with top-four hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle may be operating on a limited budget but their summer additions to the squad have aroused more interest than those of Tottenham, the North London side losing the services of a handful of youngsters but bringing in no-one ahead of the new season. This will be of huge concern to Spurs fans as the new campaign rapidly approaches and while Mauricio Pochettino has a record of bringing out the best in talented youngsters, he will be hugely frustrated at the lack of transfer activity over recent weeks as well as the departure of some younger players who have left in search of more first-team action.
Spurs visited Newcastle on the opening weekend of 2017/18 with the game ending 2-0 to the visitors and they did the double over the Magpies by winning 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Wembley. With Newcastle struggling to find the net in their pre-season outings, we’ll be going for another Spurs win this weekend as well as a clean sheet for the visitors, BetVictor Bookies going 13/5 on Spurs to win-to-nil.
