There’s little doubt that Michael van Gerwen is right at the top of his game right now and following the withdrawal of Gary Anderson from the Premier League, the bookmakers have slashed the Dutchman’s odds to a mere 1/2, making him clear favourite to retain his crown.
Indeed Van Gerwen’s price has shortened from 4/5 over the past few days but despite providing a meagre return for punters, this hasn’t prevented a rash of bets on the Dutchman with a reported 56% of all bets in this market going on the reigning world champion since the announcement that Anderson would be withdrawing.
This is almost six times the amount of bets heading in the direction of Rob Cross who sits third in the Premier League Winner betting market at odds of 9/1 with William Hill Bookmakers. Last year’s finalist Michael Smith has moved into second place in the outright betting at 7/1.
In order to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of Anderson, nine players including the likes of Dimitri van den Bergh, John Henderson and Nathan Aspinall will be lined-up as contenders to play one match apiece. Points are gained by beating these contenders although not in the opposite direction and one player will be eliminated on ‘Judgement Night, in Rotterdam.
