Sam Allardyce’s arrival at Goodison Park in November was followed by a run of excellent form for Everton, however a couple of disappointing goal-less draws ushered in a turnaround in fortunes and with just six league wins in 2018 the Toffees ultimately missed out on a finish in the top-seven of the Premier League, a position which would have secured for them a place in the Europa League. The supporters were pretty vocal in their feelings and they had a chance to voice their concerns when the club hierarchy stumbled upon the somewhat bizarre idea of sending out questionnaires asking the fans about their thoughts and feelings towards the manager. Needless to say some of the answers were pretty forthright although in the end ‘Big Sam’ rode out the controversy at that time. Nevertheless the news was confirmed this morning that Sam Allardyce will part company with Everton and the search for a successor is now on.
Now that Big Sam has been sacked, who will replace him in the Godson Park dug-out?
At the top of the betting is a man who the Toffees were wanting when they were hunting for a new boss last season – namely Marco Silva. The Portuguese manager took charge of Watford last summer although the Toffees were confident of luring him to Merseyside, however the Hornets stood firm and forced Everton to take their search elsewhere. Once the Toffees ended their pursuit of Silva, Watford took the decision to dispense with his services claiming that the lure of Goodison Park had ‘turned his head’ and this was his last stint in managerial circles.
If the odds are any indication of what will actually happen, then it looks very much as though Silva could be making a move to Merseyside with William Hill Bookies going 1/2 on Everton finally getting their man.
