Manchester City’s Premier League title bid has been dealt a few blows in recent weeks although they got things back on track when edging past current leaders Liverpool to the tune of 2-1 last week, thus cutting the Reds’ lead at the top of the table to just four points. The Citizens will look to remain on course for a successful defence of the League Cup when they entertain League One side Burton Albion on Wednesday evening and there is little doubt that boss Pep Guardiola couldn’t have hoped for a better tie at this crucial stage of the tournament. City could easily have been paired with either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur, however they shouldn’t underestimate the Brewers, especially since we’ve already had a couple of cup upsets of late.
Burton Albion have enjoyed an excellent run to the semi-finals of the League Cup and far from being gifted ‘kind’ draws along the way, they have needed to negotiate their way past the likes of Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Aston Villa. Nevertheless can we expect them to brush aside Manchester City on Wednesday evening and put themselves in the driving seat ahead of the second leg at the Pirelli Stadium?
The Citizens were knocked out of the FA Cup by then-League One outfit Wigan Athletic last term although that was a one-off cup tie and we don’t expect Pep Guardiola’s men to slip-up in this two-legged affair. Indeed we envisage the home side effectively killing this tie off completely in front of their home fans, especially so since for all their cup heroics, the Brewers have been pretty abysmal away from the Pirelli Stadium this season. City should in theory run riot at the Etihad on Wednesday evening and even the absence of a few first-team regulars won’t prevent this from being a thoroughly one-sided affair, Paddy Power Bookmakers going 7/5 on Manchester City -3 on Handicap Market.
