Liverpool may have the Premier League Title in the bag but they will be going all-out to add to Manchester City’s woes by grabbing their first win as champions at the Etihad Stadium tonight. Man City’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea last week was enough to gift the Reds the Premier League title for the very first time and Jurgen Klopp’s men followed up their celebrations by thumping Crystal Palace to the tune of 4-0 the following evening. Liverpool now sit on 86 points with second-placed Manchester City some 23 points behind them.
The Citizens have never given the Reds any meaningful competition at the summit of the Premier League table, however they will be given an opportunity to save some of their blushes when they face the champions this evening.
When these two sides meet, there are usually goals galore and we expect this to be the case when they line-up against each other tonight. City have found the back of the net in all-but-three of their last fifteen games across competitions while Liverpool have failed to score in four outings during this time. Indeed Man City are top of the Premier League scoring charts this season with a grand total of 77 while Liverpool have helped themselves to 70 goals since the start of the campaign.
When they walk onto the pitch this evening, Manchester City will clearly give the Reds the respect that they deserve, however once the whistle blows all of that will go out of the window. The hosts will certainly be hurting given the fashion in which they lost in their defence of the title while Liverpool will be eager to prove without doubt that they have been top dogs throughout the season for very good reason.
Thick and fast
The games are coming thick and fast at the moment and no manager can give guarantees that key players will be starting each game. Nevertheless given that the Reds are up against Man City, we envisage all of Klopp’s key men to be in their usual positions although the Liverpool boss has hinted that it has proven tough to keep all his players fit.
Liverpool do have the title in the bag and as such this could be an opportune match for Klopp to try out a few new tactics before the end of the season. This could also be an opportunity for City gaffer Pep Guardiola to do the same, first-choice striker Sergio Aguero out of action due to recent knee surgery and the likes of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and David Silva all waiting in the wings.
This will almost certainly be a thrilling end-to-end affair with loads in the way of action, however picking an outright winner is a tough proposition and as such, we’ll be playing it safe and going for the spoils to be shared, even though we believe that the goals will be raining down in the east-end of Manchester.
