Newly appointed Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has been hitting the right notes recently, the former lawyer impressing with his line of questioning in the House of Commons. Indeed Starmer has been getting the better of PM Boris Johnson on many occasions and should he continue in this fashion, then he can only win more supporters.
Unsurprisingly this forensic dismantling of the Prime Minister has resulted in Starmer’s odds on becoming next PM tumble substantially and as things stand he is as low as 6/4 with some bookmakers to succeed Boris Johnson in 10 Downing Street, a best price of 7/4 up for grabs with one firm.
This is the result of a rash of bets being aimed towards the Labour leader with a reported 81% of all bets over the past week backing Starmer in the ‘Next Prime Minister’ betting market.
Some distance back in the market at 4/1 is second-favourite Rishi Sunak, the current chancellor also impressing due to his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
With Boris Johnson briefly absent due to contracting the virus, Dominic Raab took the reins and he didn’t go down at all well with punters with his odds tumbling from 10/1 to 16/1. He is currently a 12/1 punt to take the reins from Boris Johnson when the time comes.
Michael Gove has been a big mover in the betting market of late, the Cabinet Minister seeing his odds tumble from 20/1 to 14/1 in the last few days. Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Sajid David are next in the betting at 25/1 apiece.
