Gillingham v Southend United Match Preview & Free Bets

Can Gillingham make it two league wins on the bounce when they entertain Southend United on Saturday afternoon

Once again Gillingham find themselves struggling in League One and after the opening twelve games of the season they sit in 19th position in the league table with just eleven points to their name. Nevertheless they will have had their confidence boosted by the excellent 2-0 win at table-topping Portsmouth last weekend and while the subsequent 4-0 thrashing at home to Tottenham Hotspur U21 in the Checkatrade Trophy will have been a huge disappointment,  Steve Lovell will be attaching far more importance to the league campaign with the Gills boss mindful that failure to turn things around could result in a relegation battle towards the end of the season. Indeed following a poor run of four consecutive league defeats, Gillingham have picked up four points in their subsequent two League One outings although we’re far from confident that they will manage something for their troubles when Southend come to town, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Gillingham v Southend.

The visitors remain in the top half of the league table thanks to some excellent recent results. Indeed following a very slow start to the campaign during which they collected just a single point from their opening two matches and suffered a first round exit from the Carabao Cup, the Shrimpers have certainly stepped up a gear and head into this match on the back of a decent run during which they have won three and drawn one of their last four league matches. They were dumped out of the Checkatrade Trophy earlier this week courtesy of a 2-0 defeat at local rivals Colchester United, however as regards their league campaign Chris Powell’s men are doing rather well right now and as such we fancy the visitors’ chances of collecting the three points at Priestfield this weekend. The Gills have been disappointing in front of their home fans in recent weeks while Southend have won three of their last four league games away from home, therefore we’ll be siding firmly with the Shrimpers on Saturday with William Hill Bookmakers going 5/4 on Southend United to win.
