The Scottish Championship title race is starting to turn into a two-horse race with previous favourites Ayr United starting to stumble in the latter stages of the campaign. Dundee United have now become Ross County’s main challengers for top-honours in the second-tier and while there remains a sizeable gap between the two sides as things stand, the Tangerines will be confident of chasing the Highlanders all the way.
With the league leaders not in action this weekend, United have a chance to narrow this gap down to just five points when they welcome rock-bottom side Alloa Athletic to Tannadice on Saturday afternoon. Robbie Neilson’s side edged past Ross County 1-0 at this venue on Tuesday evening and the evidence points very much towards them making it two wins on the bounce when the Wasps come to town this weekend, a perfect response to a poor run which had seen the Tayside outfit lose each of their previous two outings.

Visitors Alloa Athletic gave their Championship survival chances a shot in the arm when they beat Queen of the South 2-1 at Palmerston Park last month but this was followed by a thoroughly disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Dunfermline Athletic. As such, the Wasps remain firmly rooted to the foot of the Championship table with three points separating them from second-from-bottom side Partick Thistle. Indeed last month’s win in Dumfries was the only occasion in which Alloa avoided defeat in seven outings and we don’t envisage them managing anything for their efforts when they travel to Tannadice this weekend, Paddy Power Bookmakers going 23/10 on Dundee United to win and both teams to score.
