Chelsea’s defensive frailties were there for all they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to European hopefuls Sheffield United at the weekend, this result leaving them nervously looking over their shoulders. Leicester City and Manchester United are both sitting within spitting distance of the Blues as things stand and any further slip-ups for Frank Lampard’s men will surely be taken advantage of by the rest of the chasing pack.
This was the second time that Frank Lampard’s men had leaked three goals since their return from the enforced break and it is becoming crystal clear that they are in desperate need to some new signings in defence. This will be crucial should the Blues wish to be a genuine contender for next season’s Premier League title and the weekend thrashing will only have heightened these concerns.
As for Norwich City, their relegation to the Championship was effectively confirmed at the weekend when they leaked four goals without reply to West Ham United at Carrow Road. The Canaries now sit nine points adrift at the foot of the Premier League table with just three matches left to play and given that their goal-difference is by far the worst in the top-flight, it is now virtually impossible for them to save their skin.
This will be a great chance for Chelsea to get their Champions League bid back on track and we expect the home side to grab the opportunity with both hands. This should be a relatively one-sided affair and despite Chelsea’s defence being extremely suspect, we expect them to hold firm against the basement boys on Tuesday evening.
