Chelsea U21s appear to be taking the Checkatrade Trophy very seriously given that they made it through to the last four of the competition in their first appearance in 2017/18, the young Blues losing to eventual trophy winners Lincoln City via a penalty shoot-out. They are fancied to make it through to the last eight for the second season in succession by beating League One outfit Peterborough United this evening.
The main purpose of entering academy sides into this competition is to get the youngsters playing against more seasoned professionals – albeit from lower divisions – and help them break into their first teams, however it is a matter of conjecture whether or not the EFL Trophy will help Chelsea’s youngsters lift themselves into the first team at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues finished top of the group table in this competition with wins over Plymouth Argyle and Swindon Town as well as a defeat to Newport County. Since them they have edged past AFC Wimbledon and confidence will be high in the home camp ahead of their home meeting with the Posh tonight, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Chelsea U21 v Peterborough United.
Peterborough United are flying high in League One following an excellent start to the season but they were on the receiving end of a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Championship side Middlesbrough in their weekend FA Cup outing. Steve Evans will likely ring a few changes for this match – the Peterborough boss mindful that his side remain in with a chance of automatic promotion this season – and we really don’t fancy their chances against a young Chelsea side which can boast some of the best young talent in the country. As such we’ll be siding with the home team to edge their way into the last eight of this season’s Checkatrade Trophy tonight, BetVictor Bookmakers going 13/8 on Chelsea U21 to win.
