Chelsea clearly didn’t want to be in the Europa League this season, their clear aim being the Champions League. Nevertheless they are where they are and no doubt they will have been more than pleased with the outcome of the draw for the group stages of Europe’s second-tier competition.
BetVictor Bookmakers have Chelsea chalked-in as 6/1 favourites to lift the Europa League trophy this season and with the winner of the tournament guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League, the incentive is certainly there for Maurizio Sarri’s men. The Blues have been drawn with Vidi FC, BATE and PAOK in the group stages, this being seen as an excellent outcome. Chelsea’s rivals Arsenal are also in this tournament and they have also been given a favourable draw with FC Vorskia, Qarabag and Sporting in their group. British interest in the competition extends north of the border with Celtic set to face Rosenborg, RB Leipzig and Salzburg while Rangers will lock horns with Spartak Moscow, Rapid Vienna and Villarreal, the opening matches set to be played on 20th September.
Chelsea are now 6/1 favourites to go all the way in this season’s Europa League with rivals Arsenal not too far behind at 8/1. Sevilla are old hands in this tournament and they are next at 16/1 while Scottish hopefuls Celtic are 66/1 and Old Firm rivals Rangers are way out at 200/1.
Chelsea are certainly a decent bet to win the Europa League given that manager Sarri will see it as another route into next season’s Champions League and will therefore afford it his utmost priority. Indeed with the Premier League proving so competitive in recent seasons, Sarri may well see this as the easiest route into Europe’s top-tier competition and we can expect to see strong Chelsea starting line-ups for the group stages.
