Carlisle United 3/1 for Relegation from League Two

Update: 12.11.24

Carlisle returned to winning ways when they edged past Salford on their travels on Saturday afternoon but Mike Williamson’s men remain very much in the danger zone.

Welcome three points

It was a welcome three points for the Cumbrians on Saturday afternoon when they ended their nine-game winless run across competitions with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Salford City on Saturday afternoon. Sub Ben Barclay came off the bench and scored the only goal of the game for Carlisle to earn his side their third league victory of the campaign and this has given fans cause for optimism following a dreadful start to the season.

More defeats than any other League Two side

After fifteen rounds of fixtures, the Cumbrians have collected a mere eleven points with ten league defeats to their name, more than any other side in the division. The Brunton Park outfit sit just one point clear of bottom side Morecambe who also collected three points at the weekend, courtesy of a 2-1 win away to Harrogate Town.

Hugely competitive division

Just one point separates Mike Williamson’s men from safety in what is once again a hugely competitive division, however the bookies make Carlisle United one of the favourites for relegation at the end of the season at a best price of 3/1 (lowest odds 5/2). As things stand, Morecambe remain favourites for the drop at odds as low as 17/20 (best price 5/4) while Harrogate Town are 9/4 to drop into the National League at the end of 2024/25.

28.10.24

Carlisle United turned to Mike Williamson earlier this season as the club desperately looked to turn things around but the new manager has inherited a set of players who don’t seem capable of winning games.

Promotion

Things looked so good for Carlisle United 18 months ago. The side won promotion to League One via the play-offs at Wembley and soon welcomed in new American owners. Improvements were made to the somewhat antiquated Brunton Park and following relegation back down to the fourth tier, there was a belief at the start of the season that a promotion push could be on the cards.

Relegation

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth and fourteen games into the new campaign, the Cumbrians find themselves firmly in the League Two relegation zone with four points separating them from safety. Indeed, with much of the season left to play, there’s plenty of time for Mike Williamson’s men to haul themselves to safety but on recent form it’s hard to envisage.

Single home win

The stark fact is that the Cumbrians have lost more games (10) than any other side in the fourth tier and they have won just two of their fourteen league matches. Indeed, in front of their own home fans, Carlisle have only managed a single win this term across competitions, a 1-0 win over ‘local’ rivals Barrow back in August.

One of the favourites

Far from being one of the favourites for promotion – as they were before the start of the current campaign – Carlisle are now one of the favourites for relegation into the National League, some bookmakers going as low as 5/2 that this proves to be the case (best odds 7/2). Indeed, only bottom side Morecambe are above the Cumbrians in the League Two Relegation betting market at a best price of 4/5, the Lancashire side sitting just one point below the Cumbrians at the time of writing.
