Carlisle United 30/1 for relegation out of Football League

Carlisle United's weekend defeat to Yeovil Town was just the latest in a series of hugely disappointing results for John Sheridan's men

It may seem too early to be talking of relegation, especially for a side which have collected twenty points from sixteen league matches, however of all the sides in League Two it is Carlisle United which have been plummeting down the table like a proverbial stone. The Cumbrians were sitting in the top-four not too long ago, however they now sit sixteenth in the League Two table following a dreadful run which has seen them pick up just a single point in their last four outings. Indeed John Sheridan’s men have been at their worst in front of the home fans with defeat in each of their last five league games at Brunton Park and not a single goal scored during that time. This is a dreadful statistic by any team’s standards and should the Cumbrians fail to arrest this inexorable slide, then the threat of relegation will loom large.

The bookies feel that there’s no reason to expect Carlisle to be amongst the relegation battlers towards the end of the season with Unibet Bookmakers going 30/1 that they find themselves in the National League next term, however the danger signs are clear for all to see and while the Cumbrians remain well clear of the bottom three as things stand, this can change all too quickly. Indeed Carlisle have lost to both Macclesfield Town and Morecambe in recent weeks, these two struggling sides being the two favourites for the drop at the end of the campaign – an ominous sign indeed! Is there some way that Sheridan can stop the rot? If there is, then the Carlisle boss needs to find it quickly, otherwise the Cumbrians may find themselves out of the Football League for the second time in their long history.
