Ralph Hasenhuttl steps into the hot-seat at Southampton for the very first time as his new charges lock horns with a Cardiff City outfit which have been showing huge signs of improvement in recent weeks. The Saints wasted little time in appointing the 51-year-old following the sacking of Mark Hughes just days earlier and the Austrian certainly has a decent pedigree having steered Ingolstadt into the Bundesliga and leading RB Leipzig to a top-two finish in their first season in the German top-flight. Southampton had earned for themselves a reputation for making shrewd decisions with regard to managerial appointments although the last few bosses have been somewhat uninspired and they will be desperately hoping that Hasenhuttl won’t fall flat on this face.
In fairness the new gaffer hasn’t been given long to work with his players and we’re not expecting an immediate upturn in fortunes when they lock horns with Cardiff City on Saturday afternoon, the Bluebirds building much of their recent success on winning games on home soil. The hosts will certainly provide Hasenhuttl with solid opposition in his first game in charge, the bookmakers giving away free bets on Cardiff City v Southampton.
Cardiff City have enjoyed recent wins over Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers and we expect them to add the Saints to that list on Saturday afternoon. The Bluebirds haven’t been renowned for keeping clean sheets this season and the visitors should play their part in making this a thrilling affair, however we’ll be siding firmly with the home side to collect all three points and thus thwart Hasenhuttl’s ambitions of getting his tenure off to the best possible start, Ladbrokes Bookmakers going 5/1 on Cardiff City to win and both teams to score.
