Ryan McCann was the man of the moment in 2008 when he scored an amazing 84-yard goal in the dying seconds against Dundee to secure for Queen of the South a place in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. Better was to come when the Doonhamers edged their way to victory in a seven-goal thriller against Aberdeen and go through to their first ever appearance in the final of the competition, the Dumfries outfit putting in a brave effort when losing 3-2 to Rangers.
Queens made light work of Premiership side Dundee at Palmerston Park last night, Stephen Dobbie banging-in a hat-trick with the Dark Blues failing to find the back of the net in the first Scottish Cup meeting of these sides since that famous afternoon in 2008. The Doonhamers will now meet Aberdeen in the fifth round of the competition and Queens fans will be hoping for a repeat of that famous semi-final victory of eleven years ago, albeit at an earlier stage of the tournament.
Three games now stand between Queen of the South and their second ever Scottish Cup Final appearance, however Aberdeen will be a tough nut to crack at Pittodrie and the best that the visitors can realistically hope for on February 10th will be to take the Dons back to Palmerston Park for a replay. Indeed the Doonhamers have been red hot in front of their home fans this season and should a replay be needed in this fifth-round tie, then Queens can be confident of seeing off another Premiership side on home turf.
Realistically, Queen of the South aren’t expected to lift their first ever Scottish Cup this season but there are many pundits who confidently predict that they can go further in the competition given their impressive performance last night. Much will depend on star-player Stephen Dobbie and should he manage to put in a similar performance to that which saw him rip the Dundee defence to shreds last night, then we can expect to see the Doonhamers take Aberdeen all the way next month.
Queen of the South are 100/1 with Paddy Power Bookmakers to win the 2018/19 Scottish Cup.
