It’s been far from plain sailing for a Sunderland side which were expected to dominate the League One campaign from start to finish and while Jack Ross’s men are unbeaten in the third tier, they have managed just four wins from their seven outings. This run culminated in a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Fleetwood Town last time out, a match in which the Black Cats had to claw their way back from a goal behind to force a share of the spoils and Ross will be desperate to lift team spirits in what has thus far been a pretty disappointing season.
Sunderland remain the bookmakers’ favourites to win the League One title next May, however as things stand they trail surprise leaders Peterborough United by four points and failure to win this weekend will leave them with a bit of a mountain to climb, even at this early stage of proceedings. Indeed the Black Cats have drawn their last two league games at the Stadium of Light although they are generously priced to collect the three points this weekend when they travel to a Burton Albion outfit which are languishing in the lower reaches of the League One table.
The Brewers dropped down from the Championship alongside Sunderland at the end of last season and they took a while to find their feet at this lower level with just a single win in their opening five league matches. They appear to have stopped the rot somewhat with four points collected from their last two outings but on Saturday afternoon they will be facing a Sunderland side which seem more capable of getting positive results when they are without the pressure of playing in front of their home fans. The Wearsiders have dropped just two points in their three away games this season with wins in each of the last two and we’ll be siding with the Black Cats to continue this run at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday, William Hill Bookmakers going 23/20 on Sunderland to win.
