Following a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester City last week, champions Liverpool appeared to awaken from their celebratory slumber by brushing aside Aston Villa to the tune of 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Reds were far from convincing perhaps but it was a routine win which lifted them ever closer to the 100-point mark. Whether they do actually reach this target remains to be seen but the fans will surely be happy enough seeing their team win the Premier League title for the first time.

Second best

That said, Jurgen Klopp isn’t the sort of manager who will be happy taking his feet off the gas and while the Reds were clearly second-best in their trip to the Etihad Stadium, there’s little to suggest that the same scenario will come to fruition on the south coast this evening.

Meaningful opposition

In fairness, while Liverpool have stormed to the Premier League title, they haven’t had much in the way of meaningful opposition along the way. Manchester City have been too inconsistent to mount any meaningful challenge while the best of the rest have been far behind throughout the campaign. The bookies certainly feel that Man City will be the ones to beat next season and Klopp will be looking to change that view by finishing the season in style, starting with another win tonight.

Breathe easily

Brighton are now far enough away from the relegation zone that they can breathe relatively easy, some nine points now separating them from the bottom three. Upon their return from the lockdown, they edged past Arsenal 2-1 and have bounced back from a 3-0 mauling at home to Manchester United by brushing aside relegation-bound Norwich City to the tune of 1-0 last time out. This is far from convincing form but it is an indication that the Seagulls can beat anyone on their day and while we don’t envisage them getting the better of Liverpool tonight, we do believe that they can make them work hard for their three points.
