Looking Good on the Home Straight

Only a couple of weeks ago, Brentford looked destined to sweep past West Bromwich Albion and into the Championship automatic promotion berths. Thomas Frank’s men had strung together an excellent eight-game winning run and only Stoke City and struggling Barnsley stood between them and a place in the top two. The Baggies were dropping points left, right and centre at this point and most pundits were of the general opinion that the West Londoners would soon be enjoying their first season ever in the Premier League.

Failure at the Final Hurdle

Unfortunately for the Bees, it was not to be. They slipped up against Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium and even more surpriningly, they lost at home to then-bottom side Barnsley, thus scuppering any chances of making it into the top two. A play-off semi-final meeting with Swansea City was then on the agenda and Frank’s men got off to a poor start thanks to a 1-0 defeat in the first leg at the Liberty Stadium. This could be looked upon as a minor inconvence and the likelihood is that they can overturn that deficit at Griffin Park, however the home defeat to the Tykes will have dented confidence and having lost three games on the bounce, it’s hard to have much faith in the Bees right now.

Solid Welshmen

Swansea City have generally been solid since their return from the break, the South Wales outfit having lost just two of their ten matches with six wins during this time. The Swans finished the regular campaign some eleven points behind Brentford in sixth position and having won three and drawn two of their last five games on the road, we envisage them giving a decent account of themselves in their meeting with the Bees on Wednesday evening.

Much at Stake

This looks set to be a thrilling encounter with much at stake. Brentford need to give it their all at Griffin Park while Swansea will likely push hard from the outset and try to put the tie out of sight. In the end we believe that Brentford will outgun their opponents and ultimately secure for themselves a place in the play-off final, however it won’t be pretty.
