A trip to Brentford is one of my favourite away-days and the match experience is one I will certainly miss when they move to their new ground a mile or so away. Griffin Park is very much an old-school football ground – famously with a pub near each corner – although it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for many visiting sides this season with just two teams heading home with the three points in the bag. The last home game for the Bees ended in a 5-0 demolition of Birmingham City and the hosts are certain to give high-flying Cardiff City a run for their money when they visit on Tuesday evening.
As things stand, Brentford are far enough away from the play-off places to forget about such as issues as promotion and realistically they are destined for a mid-table finish to the season given that they are also completely safe from any relegation threat. Not so visitors Cardiff City who are starting to believe that they can catch leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race for the title.
Only a few weeks ago the Championship title race looked pretty much cut-and-dry with Wolves a country mile in front of the chasing pack. Nevertheless Nuno Espirito Santos’ men have slipped-up badly and their lead has now been cut to just three points. Victory for the Bluebirds at Griffin Park, coupled with a Reading win at Molineux, could see Neil Warnock’s men climb level on points with the West Midlanders and there is a very real prospect of this actually happening on Tuesday evening.
Nevertheless Brentford’s form in front of their home fans cannot be overlooked and the evidence suggests that the Bees can manage something from this match. Only Nottingham Forest and Norwich City have won at Griffin Park in the league this season and we don’t envisage Cardiff City becoming the third, a draw looking the most likely outcome between a Bluebirds side which have won each of their last five games by a single-goal margin and a Bees outfit which are thoroughly enjoying home comforts this term.
