Surprise Result

We confidently predicted that promotion-chasing Brentford would easily dispose of rock-bottom side Barnsley when the sides met at Griffin Park last night, however the Tykes put in a decent display in West London and ran out 2-1 winners with Clarke Odour scoring the winning goal for the visitors in the first minute of stoppage time. This was enough to lift the visitors out of the relegation zone and thus secure their Championship status for another season.

Opportunity Squandered

With second-placed West Bromwich Albion dropping points at home to Queens Park Rangers, Brentford could have leapfrogged them into the automatic promotion berths at the eleventh hour with victory over Barnsley.

Huge Disappointment

All of this must be hugely disappointing for the Bees given that they saw their eight-match winning run come to an end with back-to-back defeats to Stoke City and Barnsley. This downturn in form couldn’t have come at a worse time and they now need to negotiate the play-offs in order to claim a place in the Premier League for the first time ever.

Play Offs

The bookmakers fancy Brentford’s chances of successfully negotiating what lies in store in the coming weeks, most firms going 6/4 that they are plying their trade in the top flight next term. Fulham are perceived as their closest rivals in the betting market at odds of 9/4 while Welsh rivals Cardiff City and Swansea City are 7/2 and 9/2 respectively for promotion.
