The football season made a welcome return at the weekend and with it came plenty of excitement and goals. Indeed no less than 32 Championship goals came our way on Saturday afternoon with three the previous evening and four in the Sunday afternoon meeting between Leeds United and Stoke City.
The fans will certainly be more than happy for this glut of goals to continue throughout the season and as things stand, Brentford’s Neal Maupay, Wigan Athletic’s Michael Jacobs and Norwich City’s One Hernandez enjoy a goal-count of two apiece with Stoke City’s Benik Afobe amongst a host of players with a single goal each.
There are a wealth of top-quality strikers in this season’s Championship campaign, however picking out a potential top-scorer is far tougher than in the Premier League where one can choose from the likes of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Mohamed Salah with a degree of certainty. As things stand, Stoke’s Benik Afobe is favourite to finish the season top of the pile in the Championship with Ladbrokes going 6/1 that he scores more goals than anyone else in the second tier. Lewis Grabban (12/1), Dwight Gayle (12/1) and Neal Maupay (14/1) are also fancied to win the Championship Golden Boot in 2018/19.
In 2017/18 Matej Vydra finished the season in pole position with some 21 goals to his name and he offers decent value to repeat this feat at odds of 16/1.
