England were all but dead and buried as their number 11 Jack Leach joined vice-captain Ben Stokes at the crease in the third Ashes Test, however while Australia were all set to wrap-up the win which would see them retain the Ashes with two matches left to play, there was a massive surprise in store.
The only chance which England had of winning this match rested firmly on the shoulders of all-rounder Stokes and having clubbed a couple of sixes off spinner Nathan Lyon, fans started to believe that the unthinkable was actually possible. Stokes went on to thump boundaries all over Headingley while protecting Leach from most of the strike and it was clear that something very special was brewing. Runs kept coming and confidence amongst the home fans was evident, especially when Leach survived an LBW review and escaped being run out thanks to Lyon fluffing his lines.
The tension was rising and with the hosts needing just two to win, Leach grabbed his first run off the 17th ball with a single. Stokes then stepped up to smash the following delivery from Pat Cummins to steer England to an astonishing turnaround and one of their greatest – and most unlikely – wins in Test cricket.

The result of all of this is that Ben Stokes has been slashed in the betting market to be named ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ in 2019. His heroics at the crease have earned the all-rounder the admiration of the nation and punters have been backing him in their droves to be handed the award later this year. This has sent his odds crashing from 11/10 yesterday to just 1/5 with BetVictor Bookmakers, the vast majority of all bets in this market being aimed towards the England hero. Indeed with two more Tests yet to play in this series, the opportunity is there for more heroics from Stokes and as such we might expect to see his odds slashed even further.
Second in the outright betting is F1 star Lewis Hamilton at 16/1, alongside champion jockey Frankie Dettori at the same odds.
