The football season has returned with a vengeance with a shed-load of goals banged-in on the opening weekend of the campaign. Indeed League One saw plenty of goal-mouth action with just a single goal-less draw at the weekend, this being the only stalemate in the twelve Saturday afternoon games.
There were goals in Accrington Stanley’s meeting with Gillingham although unfortunately for the Lancashire side they didn’t manage to score either of them as the Gills ran out 2-0 winners with Josh Parker and Brandon Hanlan getting their names onto the scoresheet. Stanley enjoyed 60% of possession and had no less than seventeen shots on goal, however it counted for nothing on the day and they sit second-bottom of League One after their opening game, only Oxford United’s 4-0 defeat keeping them off bottom-place.
Nevertheless Stanley are favourites to drop down to League Two at the end of the season with Ladbrokes Bookmakers going 6/5 on Accrington plying their trade in the fourth-tier next term.
Other sides in the mix for relegation to League Two include Wycombe Wanderers (5/4), Gillingham (2/1), Walsall (2/1) and AFC Wimbledon (3/1), however Accrington will be desperate to bounce back from their opening-day defeat with their supporters already certain to be anxious for the season ahead. Another such defeat could see Stanley cast adrift at the foot of the table and no-one will be wanting to see their side play catch-up at this early stage of the campaign.
